The Sambalpur manufacturing plant, located in the state of Odisha, is an integrated steel facility with a total installed metal capacity of 6.25 MTPA (including both intermediate and final products) as of March 31, 2024.
As of December 31, 2020, the plant included a wide range of production units such as:
- Two pellet plants,
- Seven Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) kilns for sponge iron production — consisting of two kilns of 350 TPD, two kilns of 100 TPD, and three kilns of 500 TPD,
- Twelve billet furnaces — including four furnaces of 18 TPH, four furnaces of 8 TPH, and four furnaces of 12 TPH,
- One each of rolling mill, structural mill, wire rod mill, and pipe mill,
- And seven ferro alloy furnaces — with two furnaces of 6.0 MVA, two furnaces of 9 MVA, and three furnaces of 11 MVA.
The following table presents the installed capacities as of December 31, 2020, along with the proposed capacity expansion plans for the Sambalpur manufacturing plant, showcasing its continuous growth and modernization.
The table below shows the installed capacities as of December 31, 2020, along with the proposed capacity expansions at the Sambalpur manufacturing plant:
| Particulars | Existing Installed Capacity (as of Dec 31, 2020) | Proposed Capacity Expansion |
|---|---|---|
| Pellet | 3,000,000 TPA | 600,000 TPA |
| Sponge Iron (1) | 1,155,000 TPA | 561,000 TPA |
| Billet (2) | 862,480 TPA | 461,200 TPA |
| Rolling Mill & Wire Rod Mill | 320,000 TPA | 510,000 TPA |
| Structure Mill | 60,000 TPA | – |
| Pipe Mill | 30,000 TPA | – |
| Ferro Alloy (3) | 112,000 TPA | 14,000 TPA |
Note:
- The information regarding the existing installed capacity as of December 31, 2020, and the proposed capacity expansion is based on various assumptions and estimates considered during the calculation of installed capacity.
These assumptions are in line with standard capacity calculation practices followed in the steel industry and are derived after reviewing the company’s explanations and the details of the equipment installed at the plant.
- The specific assumptions and estimates taken into account are as follows: - (1) Sponge Iron (Direct Reduced Iron): Capacity of each kiln (in TPD) × 330 days per year
- (2) Billet: Capacity of each furnace (in TPH) × (24 hours per day ÷ heat cycle) × 330 days per year; where 1 heat cycle = 3 hours
- (3) Ferro Alloy Products: A furnace with 1 MVA capacity is equivalent to 1,555.56 TPA. The installed capacity of ferro alloy products may vary depending on the specific type of ferro alloy produced.

This table highlights the steady progress and planned growth of the Sambalpur plant, reflecting its aim to enhance production capacity and operational efficiency in the coming years.
